China, Japan and the United States construction machinery unmanned fierce battle

Aug 06, 2019

With the advent of 5G, it will undoubtedly open the era of the Internet of Everything. At the same time, it also created a new format for the construction machinery industry - unmanned construction machinery.Faced with the 5G new winds, the global engineering machinery giants have begun to strategically deploy and launch a fierce battle around "unmanned construction machinery".

Caterpillar of the United States announced the unmanned hydraulic excavator on July 5.Japan Komatsu will also launch a verification test of self-operated construction machinery with artificial intelligence (AI) in 2019. The two masters compete, or the evolution of the global competitive landscape in the future.

On July 5th, Caterpillar released a new unmanned construction machine in Dongyou Town, Mie Prefecture, Japan, which can grasp the distance from the dump truck through sensors and load the earthwork. After verification at the construction site, we will strive to achieve practical use after 2021. Komatsu also uses AI's unmanned excavator to identify the surrounding conditions through images, to think and judge the loading of sand, driving and stopping, and strive to commercialize in 2021.

Both maintain a high level of profitability in the manufacturing industry. However, in the context of China's slowing economic growth and the expansion of local companies to sell low-priced products, the key to maintaining high profitability lies in services rather than simply selling machinery. In addition to hardware, software development capabilities may be key in combining unmanned construction machinery with digital services to drive improvements in building site efficiency.

There is a rise of Chinese companies behind the development of digital technology by Japan and the United States. The rise of small and medium-sized enterprises is fierce. Komatsu’s share of “maintaining quality and price” in China in 2018 was only around 6%, and it did not enter the top three. The use of IT to monitor operations and remote control services is the main means by which Komatsu and Chinese companies are differentiated.

The 5G wave is coming. With the increasing competitiveness of Chinese enterprises and the continuous innovation of technology, Chinese construction machinery companies have laid out the “5G+ engineering machinery application. It is exciting. The status of Japan and the United States is not rock solid.
